Merle David's Guestbook

I worked in the oil patch in Odessa back in the 70s, and used to go to the Stardust and sit in with your dad with my guitar. I still have his album he autographed to me. Really enjoyed seeing him again in the videos. Thanks

I was killing some time today on the computer, putting names of people that i have worked with and found this site.
I worked with Merle for a short while in the 70's around Odessa, Ft.Stockton area with a band called the Country Squires, Merle was a pleasure to work with and to be around. He had a wonderful sense of humor and i have many fond memories of him and his talent.
Thank you for providing this website

I am the baby sister of Merle David.I do not feel this has any bearing or predjudice as to my heart felt pride for the wonderful outstanding talent of my bro.as a top of the line musician, and a very kind humorous, loving, human being.he started playing at age5.He played many instruments with ease, but their is no describing his mastery of the fiddle, it seemed to be an extention of his hand and fingers.I had the privilege of hearing him play with his family at home and on the stage with many great bands. It was always a thrill and the crowds would cheer and cheer when he did his famous trick fiddling and"The Orange Blossom Special" Like me, they could not get enough.I can still hear that and a thousand other wonderful tunes he played, in my head. I am so blessed to to have his albums and videos to listen to and watch and I never tire of playing and enjoying them.He MADE THAT fIDDLE talk!!
I love him so and I still miss my brother so very much. we lost him in death march 10th 2002 He was born Feb.17, 1936. He has a son Billy & a daughter Karen &former wife Betty living in Odessa Tx. Our oldest living Bro Ray in Clarendon Tx.Youngest Brother Eldon living in Crosby Tx. close to Houston,Tx,(they both play music too) and our sister Jewell Millan here in Amarillo Tx.where I also live. Our oldest bro.is deceased, he too played music as well as our Dad. Our house was always filled with love laughter and MUSIC!!! I am so proud of my nephew for setting up this web site (THANKS MILLIONS BILLY!!) It is so great to help keep Merle's memory alive' as well as his musical background alive also Merle David's greatest attribute was his humility that he always maintained even as his talent grew great, was that he never got puffed up with pride, or uppity with any one, and never put down any one else"s playing no matter how bad they might have sounded Ha, he encouraged them to keep trying and was patient with everyone."The One And Only Merle David" title for his web site sums everything up beautifully about Him.I could talk all day long about the beautiful sounds he made come alive in his music. but I will stop here. I hope many many many who knew him and had the honor of hearing him play will also write in their comments.with love and cherished memories of growing up with my brother Merle David. Little sister Rita (David) Gonzalez.

Admin reply: Hello Aunt Rita.. Thanks for stopping by and contributing to dad's website. Take care, Bill

Hello:
I recently reconnected with a steel guitar playing friend of mine, Larry Toliver. He introduced me on to Merle many years ago at the Ponderosa Ball Room. I was new to fiddlin at the time and Merle showed me a few licks and was very patient with me. He no doubt is the best fiddler I've ever met and the best trick fiddler ever, hands down. I was such a rooky back then I couldn't appreciate how good Merle was back then. Just wanted to share. Thanks for the website....
Keith
